The Challenge: AI That Helps Writers Without Replacing Them

Model Routing
The Gilded Tome uses a routing layer that analyzes each request and dispatches it to the most appropriate model:
- Creative generation routes to models optimized for narrative and imagination
- Editing and refinement routes to models with strong instruction-following capabilities
- Research and fact-checking routes to models with broad knowledge and citation awareness
- Style analysis uses specialized fine-tuned models that can identify and match authorial voice
This routing is transparent to the writer — they simply write, and the system figures out what kind of help is needed.
Context Window Management
Creative writing projects generate enormous context. A novel manuscript can exceed 100,000 words, far beyond any model's context window. The Gilded Tome uses a hierarchical summarization approach:
- Active context — the current chapter and immediate surroundings
- Compressed context — summaries of earlier chapters, character sheets, and world-building notes
- Indexed context — searchable embeddings of the full manuscript for retrieval when relevant
This three-tier system means the AI always has enough context to make relevant suggestions without hitting token limits or degrading response quality.
Privacy-First Design
Writers are understandably protective of unpublished work. The Gilded Tome was built with privacy as a foundational requirement, not an afterthought:
- Manuscript data is encrypted at rest and in transit
- AI model calls use ephemeral sessions — no training on user content
- Users can choose which AI providers are allowed to process their work
- Full data export and deletion capabilities are available at any time
The Writing Experience
The interface draws inspiration from the best distraction-free writing tools while adding AI capabilities that feel natural:
- Inline suggestions appear as subtle highlights, accepted with a keystroke or dismissed by continuing to type
- The Research Panel surfaces relevant information from the manuscript and external sources without requiring the writer to leave their document
- Voice Analysis provides a dashboard showing consistency metrics — tone shifts, vocabulary patterns, and pacing analysis across chapters
What We Learned
Building The Gilded Tome reinforced a key lesson: the best AI products are the ones where users forget they're using AI. When the suggestions feel natural, when the research appears at the right moment, when the style matching is invisible — that's when the technology disappears and the writing takes center stage.
